GLACIER GREY
PHOTO DIARY OF GLACIER GREY
On an overcast day in the remote Torres del Paine National Park in the south of Chile, our Patagonia Camp guide reassured us it was the weather to see the glacier blues pop. When the tour stopped briefly at the cosy Lago Grey Hotel for the guide to collect the navigation tickets, I stepped inside and was immediately awe struck from the views from the lobby to the restaurant. Even behind glass, the sight just in front of me was like nothing I’ve seen before in real life, floating icebergs that glowed against the contrast of the black sand. Our guide was so right.
We took a wavy walk across the Lago Pingo bridge made for just six people at a time over rapidly flowing water from all the rain and through the spectacular Lenga forest to put our feet on the coarse black sand seen from the hotel windows. Transported to Grey II by a smaller motorised dinghy we cruised Lago Grey past many incredible iceberg formations till we reached Glacier Grey up close. During the three hour navigation there was some light rain while we were standing outside on the deck admiring the towering glacier and at that point it was the coldest feeling of my life.
